I realize that I have essentially become a jack of all trades but a master at nothing. I want to discover more of my passion before I go to graduate school because I want to be sure that I am investing into a degree that will support my career.

Intern Spotlight (Alexandria)

We are in full gear here at the Vivid Headquarters getting ready for furniture market while still keeping the shop in ship-shape form and managing our wonderful clients. It takes a lot of arms juggling all the balls that we have in the air and we are so very fortunate to have 5 very impressive sets of arms belonging to our fantastic intern team. We’ll be running a special feature on the blog with a little Q and A our interns.

Today’s Intern Spotlight is Alexandria, aka Dria.dria

1. Tell us a little about yourself. (Name, school, program you’re studying, where you’re from.)

My name is Alexandria Reams and I am originally from Durham, North Carolina. I attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), where I am studying Interior Architecture.

2. What made you interested in interior design?

I always knew that I wanted to pursue some type of creative field as a career. Growing up, I was definitely that artsy child who drew and painted all the time. My father is the ultimate handy man and has built decks and porches from scratch, which inspired me to get involved in a similar field. I love that interior design gives me the opportunity to express myself because it allows others to really get to know me from a different perspective.

3. Who are some of your design icons?

My number one design icon is Candice Olson. I have always loved her and I loved watching her show on HGTV Divine Design. I just admire how she can transform rooms into cool contemporary spaces. It just seems as though she does everything with ease and elegance, which is what I aspire to do some day.

Another design icon that I adore is David Bromstad. I also enjoyed watching his show on HGTV Color Splash. His design style is astonishing and bold. When looking at his creations your eye is continuously moving because everything within that space is interesting, you’ll never be bored by what he does and I love that!

4. Describe your design aesthetic.

I think that my design aesthetic can be described in three simple words: Contemporary, Colorful, and Chic. I love clean lines and simple but appealing design strategies. I love to incorporate pops of color to liven up a space and give it some character. I also love those things that make a space go from good to amazing, in whatever way possible. I think that a combination of these aesthetics is what my design style mainly consist of.

5. What do you do at Vivid Interiors?

At Vivid Interiors, my primary role is to participate in whatever activities my mentor see fit for me. That could range from doing anything necessary to make their lives easier. Since being here I have been to client meetings, installations, and manufacturer stores. I have helped revamp the retail office space and taken photos of furniture and paintings for advertisement purposes. I have been on scavenger hunts in search of local talent from artists in the downtown Greensboro area. I have assisted in ordering and finding products and material samples for client projects. Along with these activities, I have also had the opportunity to use the techniques from school through drafting AutoCAD files and creating renderings for Vivid Interiors.

6. What do you like best about interning at Vivid?

The best thing about interning at Vivid is that there is a strong personal connection aside from the business. I love that they genuinely care about their interns and want nothing but the best for us. They ask about our day and how school is going too. Even though they are like “bosses” to us they don’t try to undermine us and they encourage our participation in the projects that they do.

7. Who are your favorite musicians?

I love music so it’s kind of hard for me to narrow that choice down, but my top two would probably have to be Chris Brown and Beyoncé.

8. Favorite drink?

My favorite drink is an Arnold Palmer.

9. What is your sign?

Capricorn!

10. If you could invite anyone to dinner (living or dead) who would it be?

I would invite my Grandpa Mason to dinner. He is my mother’s father and I always hear so many stories about how loving and cool he was. He unfortunately passed away when I was like 2. I would just love to have the opportunity to spend some quality time with him and really get to build a lasting bond with him.

11. Tell us three words that describe you.

Three words that best describe me are: Strong, Goofy, and Dedicated. I have a very strong personality that some may find intimidating but to me it just represents the confidence that I have. I am extremely goofy around my friends and family. I love laughing and just being silly overall. Lastly, I am dedicated like no other. When I start something, I have to finish it regardless of the obstacles that may get in my way. When I want something bad enough, I will continually strive for that until it is obtained.

12. What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, my plans are to start a lasting career in the interior design field. I hope to either work under a firm or any company that has a strong presence in the hospitality design field. This is where my passion is and I would love to gain knowledge/experience from a company that focuses on this. As a practical plan, I will probably look for employment in the Raleigh/Durham Area, but my hopes are to be in Virginia because I know that they have many design firms that focus on hospitality design.

Artist Spotlight – Nadia Hassan

We’re back for another Artist Spotlight. Today, we’re featuring Graphic Designer, Pattern Creative Extraordinaire, Nadia Hassan. Nadia specializes in designing beautiful prints and patterns for fabric, and also has the most amazing eye for color.

Nadia designed an exclusive, signed and limited print collection for Vivid, and people are loving it!

Screen Shot 2016-02-23 at 3.21.36 PMVivid:  1.   What is your art background?

NH:  I have a fine arts degree in Design from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), but like many people, I’ve been drawing, painting, collaging and crafting since I was old enough to use crayons and scissors. Until recently, I worked full-time for UNCG as a web and graphic designer, saving the artsy pursuits for nights and weekends. Before I knew it (translation: after about six years), I had built a second career alongside my 9-5 job, in June of 2015, I made the scary-but-exhilarating decision to pursue art-making full-time.

Vivid:  2.   What materials do you use?

NH:  I work digitally with adobe Illustrator to create finished artwork, but I scan in a lot of drawings and hand-made textures to give my work more depth. Lately I’ve been working a bit with watercolor; its unpredictable nature inspires me to embrace imperfections, improvisation, and spontaneity, which I’ve noticed are qualities that I tend to resist (I blame my formal design background for that).

Vivid:  3.   Where do you find your inspiration?

NH:  Everywhere! I am often inspired by everyday objects – looking at something familiar in a new way. Color plays a big role in my work, and is often the primary point of inspiration. I collect color palettes by taking pictures of interesting colors found while out and about, especially in urban areas.

Vivid:  3.5 Where is the craziest place that you’ve found inspiration?

NH:  A metal scrapyard.

Vivid:  4.   Who are some of your favorite artists?

NH:  Charlie Harper, Charles and Ray Eames, Rex Ray, Audrey Kawasaki, Alphonse Mucha

Vivid:  5.   Describe your process.

NH:  Ha, does chaos count as a process? I’ve noticed that I have two distinct working styles depending on the nature of the project. Client work, which usually involves a brief of some sort, tends to be structured, researched, and well-planned; personal work is usually more intuitive and spontaneous – I often don’t have a particular outcome in mind until I’ve played around a bit and inspiration strikes. I enjoy both approaches, as each one taps into different skills and abilities, and satisfies different creative needs.

Vivid:  6.  Can you describe a typical day?

NH:  Variety seems to be the theme in my schedule lately – no two days are the same. The one consistent element (besides coffee) is that I’m a night owl, so I prefer to work from afternoon until the wee hours of the morning. The first part of the day usually involves responding to emails, social media upkeep, a quick workout, maybe a household chore or two, sketching ideas and studying my inspiration boards (which are all analog, despite my otherwise very digital life). After lunch, I’ll dig into whichever projects require my attention for the day, and before I know it, it’s time to go to bed.

Vivid:  7.   What musicians do you listen to?

NH:  I tend to favor upbeat indie rock with female vocals – currently enjoying the bands Alpine and Purity Ring.

Vivid:  8.   How do you take your coffee, strong and black or sweet and creamy?

NH:  Definitely strong and black.

Vivid:  9.   Favorite cocktail?

NH:  I love mimosas with brunch.

Vivid:  10. Do you have a favorite piece that you’ve created, and if so, what was it and why?

NH:  My favorite piece is still the street painting I did on February One Place in downtown Greensboro, back in April 2013. Working on such a large scale was a totally new experience; when I agreed to do the project, I truly didn’t know if I could pull it off. Alone, I definitely couldn’t have, but thanks to some very talented and clever teammates, and many wonderful volunteers from the community, we made it happen! Witnessing such a positive, cooperative community effort first-hand has forever shifted my perspective – I couldn’t be prouder to call Greensboro my home.

Vivid:  11. What is your sign?

NH:  Aquarius, and it couldn’t be more fitting.

Vivid:  12. If you could invite anyone (living or dead) to dinner, who would it be?

NH:  Charles and Ray Eames (technically that’s two, but they come as a pair)

Vivid:  13. Tell us three words that describe you.

NH:  Thoughtful, generous, down-to-earth.

Here’s a little gallery of some of Nadia’s creations.

Those of you in the Greensboro area may recognize the colorful hexagons painted on Feb. 1st St., downtown; that’s the brainchild of Nadia.

Also, please check out Nadia’s work on her website, and follow her beautiful and inspiring instagram

And finally, drop by Vivid to see Nadia’s signed and limited prints.

ORANGE LOVES PINK

Orange loves pink, and we love T-Swizzle.

Just in case you missed the grammy’s last night, Taylor Swift showed up on the red carpet wearing this amazing two piece ensemble from Atelier Versace. And just in case you missed all the memes, here are all the things that Taylor Swift looked like

But all funniness aside, we love pink and orange together. (We read somewhere on the internets that the colors are red and pink), but we’re not buying it. It totally looks like #Pink and #Orange, and it’s a color combo that rocks (just like Taylor).

Here are some of our favorite pink and orange combos in decor.

If you like the marriage of pink and orange, check out our board with more inspiring photos on pinterest.

It’s Game Day

Today is Super Bowl Sunday and our home team, The Carolina Panthers take on the Denver Broncos.

In our perpetual quest to find beautiful design, here are some gorgeous rooms that are inspired by the two teams. Without taking the colors too literal, here are our top choices

Team Panthers colors are black, blue, silver, white and gray.

Screen Shot 2016-02-07 at 10.06.32 AM

Beautiful, winning rooms, right?

And then we have the Denver Broncos in Navy and Orange. These are colors that work together really well, and we’ve found quite a few impressive rooms. Let’s take a peek.

Do you have a favorite color combo or room? We think they’re all beautiful, but we’re just a little partial to the black, blue, gray, silver and white rooms. GO PANTHERS!

Snuggled in

It’s sleeting and snowing outside. And quite cold. So as we listen to the sleet tap against the windows, we’re inside practicing the Danish art of hygge. According to the Visit Denmark website, hygge (pronounced hooga) means “creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Friends and family – that’s hygge too. There’s nothing more hygge than sitting round a table, discussing the big and small things in life. Perhaps hygge explains why the Danes are the happiest people in the world?”

Hygge to us is a warm cup of cocoa, like this recipe

Hygge is a warm and fuzzy blanket, chunky knit throws, slouchy wool socks, warm fires, good books and snuggling up with our loved ones and fur babies. Hygge is the warmth of a space, as well as the warmth of our hearts.

Hunkering Down (or going out) in Style

As the East Coast prepares for Snowpocalypse 2016, Team Vivid is thinking about doing in style. Here are some of our favorite looks for hitting the slopes (sledding slopes that is) and just lounging about and staying warm and cozy inside by the fire.

The past several decades have given us some amazing looks.

But in all seriousness, we’re loving these updated looks!
